Justplug Solves High Cost and Outage Challenges of Rural Grid-Tied Solar With Off-Grid Conversion
California's NEM 3.0 cut solar export credits by 75%. Grid-tied systems still go dark in outages. Justplug converts existing solar arrays to off-grid solutions for true energy resilience.
CALIENTE, Calif. — April 2, 2026 —A rural Southern California ranch owner came home to 900 pounds of rotten meat after a multi-day grid outage. Their grid-tied solar system shut off when the grid did. They considered converting the system to an off-grid solar setup, but the only service provider willing to make the trip quoted them $95,000. They contacted Justplug to explore options.
The Caliente-based off-grid solar + energy resilience consultancy specializes in converting grid-tied solar systems into self-sufficient, grid-independent solutions for rural properties. The company has engineered/implemented systems for 69 California properties, including rural residences, working farms, ranches, homesteads, land conservatories, animal sanctuaries, hospitality sites, and more.
California's NEM 3.0 (Net Billing Tariff) cut solar export compensation by approximately 75% for new and renegotiated contracts. Many rural property owners had their contracts rolled over to worse terms without notice. They feed power into the grid during the day and incur a bill for their nighttime power usage.
Meanwhile, rural outages have been worsening in both frequency and duration, and standard grid-tied systems shut off automatically whenever the grid goes down. Wall-charging batteries that come with these systems as add-ons take power from the grid, and installing the capacity to cover multi-day outages is cost-prohibitive for most.
Justplug’s grid-tied to off-grid solar conversion solution reuses existing solar arrays as much as possible, upgrades inverters, and adds batteries based on each client’s power requirements. While the system is independent of utilities and not impacted by outages, it maintains a connection to the grid and uses grid power as a backup for high-demand or cloudy-day situations for cost-effective resilience.
For the client above, Justplug reused the client's existing panel field, built a custom 21 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery bank, and implemented two 12,000W off-grid inverters. The system supports a 24,000W continuous load, offers multiple built-in redundancies, and keeps the entire ranch running regardless of grid status — at less than a third of the $95,000 competitor quote.
“Grid-tied solar isn’t designed for energy resilience in rural environments," said Ling Wong, Co-Founder of Justplug. "A conversion done right gets clients out from under a utility deal that has stopped working for them. It gives them control, resilience, and peace of mind without throwing away the investment they already made."
