We found our dream property, but SoCal Edison wouldn’t even let us pay them $50k for a transformer until we negotiate an easement with our neighbor and pay many tens of thousands to put up two poles… before we can have the privilege to pay hundreds in electricity bills each month and endure week-long outages.

We said, “screw it” and built a standalone off-grid system for ourselves. It works beautifully.

Since then, we’ve helped many clients in our rural community achieve energy independence, either with a standalone off-grid solar solution or using off-grid solar to lower power bills and boost resilience.

Energy resilience and independence in rural settings is a different beast

It’s almost impossible to explain the challenges to outsiders: shit breaks, and nobody wants to come up here. “What do you mean we can’t call you when the technician is 15 minutes out?” “Eh, there’s no signal 45 minutes all the way through the canyon and up the mountain.”

Unlike the other solar guys who come up for 30 minutes and pull some numbers out of their behinds, we get it because we’re living it.

Conventional grid-tied solar solutions are designed to benefit installers and utility companies. They don’t provide resilience against outages, and the dimensioning method (if any) doesn’t support self-reliance. They’re mostly sufficient for suburban developments but painfully fall short in rural settings.

Most people consider off-grid solar only suitable for small-scale projects, such as a weekend cabin or shed. However, the latest technology has made it possible to treat an off-grid solar solution as a managed infrastructure.
